Description

Well-known local artist Joy Lillith Hermann will exhibit a versatile curated show at The Society of Bluffton Artists (SoBA) gallery from May 6-June 2. An opening reception and an opportunity to meet the artist will take place from 3-5 p.m. may 12 at the SoBA gallery, 6 Church Street in Old Town Bluffton. These events are free and open to the public. The title of the show — “Expect the Unexpecting” — is a sentiment captured in Hermann’s childhood when her father asked her touch the golden petals of a dandelion that flew into the air. “Look beyond the obvious in nature, as there is a simple beauty that draw you in,” he said, words Hermann has never forgotten. “My desire to capture feelings is expressed in my paintings,” Hermann said. “I try to cause emotion to stir in those looking at them.” Hermann’s work is in acrylic and mixed media. She often uses molding pastes to build her canvases, using layers and layers of glazes and inks to create her paintings. Hermann did an intense three-month apprenticeship with world-renowned Roy Scallenberger, which enriched her talent in abstracts and also stimulated her creative expressionistic paintings. Her art is featured in private and public collections locally and all across the country. Locally, she has shown in the Juried Bluffton Seafood Festival and the Honey Horn Spring Show. In addition to her paintings, Hermann is an accomplished jewelry maker, using dichroic glass in wonderful layers and shapes to create wearable art.
